Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) ensures that all your portable electrical appliances work correctly and are fit for purpose.
What do you mean by Portable Appliance Testing?
PAT testing is a series of visual and electronic tests that are carried out on a piece of electrical equipment. If the equipment 'passes' testing, it is safe to use.
After testing, you will receive a certificate which shows all equipment tested, is safe to use at the time of testing.
How often do I need to get PAT testing done?
The electricity at work regulations 1989, require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition.
The frequency of inspection and testing depends on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. For example: a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel bedroom.
Do I need to test new equipment?
New equipment should be supplied in a safe condition and not require a formal portable appliance inspection or test. However, a simple visual check is recommended to verify the item is not damaged.
Who can undertake a PAT test?
A PAT test does not need to be carried out by an electrician, but the person doing the testing work needs to be competent to do so.
The person performing the tests must also have the correct equipment and know how to inperpret the results.
